The Great Epidemics (working title) Format: 13 x 30 min. Around the middle of the last century we claimed that all the great epidemics were under control, then AIDS came. In the meantime some of the old plagues have returned (cholera, tuberculosis, the pestilence itself) and far more important new, unknown microbes such as the Ebola virus are challenging our advanced science network. This 13 part series will not only look back on the history of the "Loimos" (the Greek word for epidemic), but asks about how will we detect and handle them in the future?
The Great Inventions (working title) Format: 13 x 30 min. What would the history of mankind be without its inventions and discoveries? This series describes entertainingly as well as scientifically profound how man learned to make use of fire, water and wind and finally to build machines. How and why was a certain technology invented, why was it needed, how was it developed and how exactly does it work? For example, without the knowledge about leverage, cranes would not have been invented and it would have been much harder to erect big buildings for representation and worship. On the other hand, if there was no social need for an invention, it remained unused. Why did the Egyptians not use steam power, although archeological proof is there that they knew how to generate steam?
The Greatest Errors and legends in Science (working title) Format: 52 x 5 min. or 13 x 25 min. "What makes you think a ship could sail against the current by making a fire under deck? I don't have time for such nonsense," (Napoleon Bonaparte). How many legends in science have been created since mankind got interested in it? A countless number for sure and even when some errors can be corrected by the advance in scientific research, there are quite a few myths that people seem to willingly stick to despite better knowledge. This entertaining series will show these common myths and explain how true they are. All © 2003 Douglas Film GmbH, Stuttgart/Germany
